Developing the CleanTech workforce

We are in the early stages of a new shift to "clean" technologies-solar, wind, tidal, geothermal , and biomass, and the practical implementations of these sustainable energies. Many regions of the country are attempting to establish centers of expertise. To participate in this broad technological shift, Louisiana needs to build a foundation of innovation, create access to intellectual capital and funding, and an inherent willingness to risk failure in the pursuit of greater success.

The key ingredient in ensuring Louisiana's ability to be a key leader in this globally acknowledged "next big thing" is a workforce that has the opportunity to adapt to the industry's current and future needs.

Because it is widely anticipated that "cleantech" is the next technological focus, it is essential that the collection of industries that are central to this broad sector have the qualified workforce they need to achieve their collective goals. As with other parts of the country, Louisiana will have a need for its share of technicians and installers-perhaps disproportionately more, given the fact that the Louisiana's residents are rebuilding after the recent disasters and now have broad exposure to cutting-edge clean technologies and might be more open to implementing new products and practices.

It is also important to focus on the local economic value of growing these jobs in the region and utilizing local talent. As pointed out in many recent studies, across America, there has been a steady decline in the percentage and number of jobs that provide self-sufficient, middle-class incomes. By supporting local programs for local industries, such as solar power, we provide an opportunity for those seeking self-sufficiency and foster new job growth in value-added occupations that are likely to stay in the region.

La CleanTech proposes to conduct a labor market study of renewable energy industries in Louisiana to learn more about area companies and their specific workforce needs and to better understand the occupations within these industries. The project will be conducted through a combination of quantitative data research of existing sources and in-depth interviews with company representatives and individuals working in the field.

We will also offer solar energy installer training programs, which will include continuing education programs in conjunction with Louisiana Technical Colleges and will also include local area apprenticeship models. We will focus on the transferable skills necessary to transition into a career in alternative energy at all levels, from installer to project manager; however, it will also be of benefit to new entrants to the workforce.
